Young Spirits debut collection features illustrations from Alice In Wonderland by Mabel Lucie Attwell, one of Britain’s best-loved artists.
While Mabel Lucie’s initial career was founded on magazine illustration, in around 1900 she began receiving commissions for book illustration.
Mabel Lucie’s gentle illustrations and distinctive style have been the nursery staple of generations of children. Her illustrated edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1911, and these are the illustrations featured on our Alice In Wonderland Collection.
Her familiar illustrations of popular children’s classics from Alice in Wonderland to Grimm’s and Hans Christian Anderson’s Fairy Tales, Peter Pan and The Water Babies are recognised and loved around the world.
Mabel Lucie’s illustrations even caught the attention of Queen Marie of Romania, who wrote children's books and short stories in English. Attwell was invited to spend several weeks at the royal palace in Bucharest in 1922 and also illustrated two long stories of the queen's.
Mabel Lucie’s unique appeal was her ability to communicate with adults –whoever they were. Her messages appealed particularly to mothers as well as families and soldiers during both the First and Second World Wars.
Mabel Lucie’s illustrations are timeless and retain their familiarity and appeal even today and are loved by all ages.
